Metal Arts Guild of Canada

Submission Deadline: 20 March 2013

“Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation.”
– Steve Jobs

The Metal Arts Guild of Canada invites members of the Guild to submit current work to our 2013 biennial juried exhibition, Design Sans Front ières: Metal Artists In Collaboration.

Digital media is democratizing art and design. Designers have access to software and fabrication processes that formerly were only available to industry. These new virtual tools are erasing the old distinctions between designers and makers, craft and industry.
At the same time, we yearn for ‘authenticity’ – the unique connection between culture, material and making that has traditionally defined craft. More and more, artists in craft disciplines – including jewellers, metalsmiths and sculptors –are working with creative thinkers from other domains. Together, they are expanding the possibilities of craft processes and traditions, and infusing modern object design with authenticity and ‘soul’.

Clearly, creativity knows no borders. Therefore, we invite collaborative duos to submit works that explore the opportunities of traditional and new modes of making and design in the metal arts; objects that integrate the materials and techniques of the metal arts and other creative disciplines. Metal artists can draw in a collaborator from any other creative field: ceramics, glassblowing, architecture, graphic design, literature, dance: all forms of collaboration are
valid and all collaborative efforts are welcome.
Each two-person team is responsible for its own conceptual development and production. One member of the duo
must be a member of the Metal Arts Guild of Canada.

The entry fee is $50, payable with Visa, MasterCard or Paypal. The entry fee covers a maximum of three works, and
covers both members of the collaborative partnership. The entry fee is nonrefundable.
At least one member of the collaborative team must be a member of the Metal Arts Guild of Canada. To become a

A jury composed of prominent Canadian metal artists, designers and gallery curators, will choose the work selected
for exhibition. The Jury will be announced on the MAGC website in December 2012, together with instructions
regarding the on-line jurying process.
